Greetings Nobles of Northshield,
This Saturday is Otsukimi, the Tor Aerie Japanese event. There are about
half of the seats still available for feast as well as many positions still
open for volunteering. The all day Bardic area will be run by the lovely
Cicilia from Nordley. A&S entries will be displayed along the wall in the
main hall with a bean count and a prize of a Kaiawase or Go set. Come see
the puppet play, or just come to play games and enjoy the festival with
your friends and aquaintences.
Please see our website for lots of great details including directions and
spaces for volunteering. http://www.tc.umn.edu/~sca/tsuki.html
Fighting will be outdoors, but the weather lately has been still nice
enough to go fight.
Keeping with tradition we ask that you bring a lunch with you to picknic on
during the festival noon-time or go to several local vendors to eat.
There are several great classes being offered.

Introduction to Shogi by Lord Oswald Frank
Shogi or Japanese Chess, traces its roots through China to the game
chaturanga from India, much like western chess. The rules, pieces and board
changed over the centuries, adding and removing pieces and spaces. History
is not very clear, but the modern rules are thought to have been largely
fixed by around 1550.
Shogi is the only major chess variant in which you can use your opponent's
pieces against him later in the game. In this session, you'll be given a
paper board and westernized pieces to cut out, as well as a the rules of
the modern game. We'll spend a few minutes on the game's history and get
right into playing a game.
Thank you to everyone who has helped out to make this event possible,
Elizabeth Upton
