bravo!
when this thread first started, i was very excited about the prospect of
taking part in a demo that would hopefully be more informative and
accessable to the general public than a regular event. i've been playing
for almost a year and have been activly trying to engage mundane friends in
the society since i started. for me, an oppertunity such as this is yet
another way to spread the enthusiasm that i, and i'm sure all of you, have
for the society.
however, all this talk about making sure that every single little detail is
accurate has killed any desire on my part to join in on this. i know that i
am not the only one on this list that is at a point where total accuracy is
completely impossible. for a lot of people in the society, it is a matter
of placing things like rent first, so buying 9 yards of silk velvet for a
sideless surcote is completely outside the realm of possiblity.
i also wonder about what type of impression we would leave on people who DO
have a genuine interest in joining. although i whole-heartedly believe that
we do need people who have perfected their chosen period and personna, we
also need to show the general populace that involvement is a process. we
need to be able to show people that they can start out with good intentions
and maybe a few years down the road have a period wardrobe and encampment.
i also applaud elizabeth for bringing up the point of being ACCESSABLE.
i've personally found it to be very, very difficult to meet people up here
because there seems to be all of these iron-clad cliques. i feel that more
people, not just the handful that always make every effort to be inclusive,
should actually step up and try to make newcomers feel welcome. i feel that
this group is missing out on so many oppertunities because of this.
well, that was my two cents (and then some)...
