Greetings Ellen!
Celtic? Which flavor? Irish Gaelic, Scottish Gaelic, Manx Gaelic,
Welsh, Cornish or Breton?
The book I've been using for Scottish Gaelic is Teach Yourself Gaelic
by Boyd Robertson and Iain Taylor. At the time I bought it it was
$14.95
without the tapes or CD, this was about 8 years ago, so I'd reckon the
price has gone up a little. I'd really reccomend getting it with the
CD. There are also Teach Yourself Irish, Welsh and probably Cornish
books out there. I found this book at Barnes and Noble.
For Scottish Gaelic Dictionaries, there is a good dictionary out now by
Colin Mark that is pretty current--but not very inexpensive. Dwelly's
Faclair Gaidhlig gu Beurla le Dealbhan (Dwelly's Gaelic to English
Dictionary with Illustrations) is the old standby classic (published in
the 1910's)
I'd also recommend that he not try to tackle "ancient Gaelic" until
he's gotten a good handle on the modern language...it is amazing, at
its core, how little gaelic has changed from Old Irish, but still, it
is tougher.
There is a college, in Sleat, in the Isle of Skye called Sabhail Mor
Ostaig. It's website is a good resource (and has an english version!),
there is an online dictionary called Stor-data Briathrachais
Here's the URL: http://www.smo.uhi.ac.uk/beurla/
I just want to also point out that these resources are for Scottish
Gaelic, which differs a little (mostly dialechtually) from Irish Gaelic
or Manx Gaelic. There are links to Irish gaelic resources from the
Sabhal Mor website. There is also an Irish gaelic learners association
(Gaeltacht Minnesota) locally--I know I've seen contact info for them
at Irish on Grand.
I've not studied the other languages of the Brythonic branch of the
Celtic language family (Welsh, Cornish and Breton), so I really can't
advise you on those.
Good luck to him!
