[Nordskogen] Ridge pole sleeve

When I hear ridge pole, I think a horizontal member that creates a ridge in
the top of the pavilion. In my vocabulary, I'm thinking you are talking
about a center pole. Are you speaking of the horizontal or vertical? I don't
remember seeing a horizontal member with a splice/joint. Maybe I haven't
been looking at the same tents. :-)

Duncan made the center pole (4" x 4" laminated from 1" stock) with a custom
welded hefty stainless steel sleeve for the Nordskogen pavilion after
watching the original pole bend in the wind.

For mine (2" x 3" laminated from 1" stock), he did a lap joint held together
with 3 bolts with wing nuts (no tools required). And the wing nuts can be
used for ready made 'pegs' to hang things on.

Justin did a interlocking wood joint for Marwen's center pole (3" x 3" made
from 2x2's). The thing I've noticed with it is the possibility of swelling
in humidity or rainy weather (makes it harder to get it together and/or
apart).

Duncan is thinking of making his ridge (horizontal - 3" x 5 1/2" laminated
from 2x6's) a 2 part beam instead of the single piece it is now. He would
draw on a timber framing joint (wedged lapped joint) to make it sturdy
enough to meet his criteria.

Duncan says you can get mild steel tubing at Beiswinger's (sp) Ace Hardware
at Hwy 96 and Hwy 35W. He says steel tubing should be fairly easy to find at
hardware stores or Home Depot also. If you're looking for stainless or
something special like brass, it would be harder.
